"What week number is it?" sounds like a trivial question until you realize there are two completely different answers, and they don't always agree. The US uses one week-numbering system; most of the rest of the world uses another. If you've ever had a report due "week 41" and wondered which day that actually is, you've hit this mismatch.

The two systems differ on one basic question: which day starts the week?

US Week Numbering (Sunday Start)

In the US, weeks start on Sunday and the first week of the year is the one containing January 1. This means:

  • Week 1 starts on January 1, regardless of what weekday that is.
  • If January 1 is a Wednesday, Week 1 is just Wednesday through Saturday (4 days), and Week 2 starts the next Sunday.
  • The year always ends in Week 52 or Week 53.

This system is informal β€” you'll see it in US calendars and some business reporting, but it isn't a formal standard the way ISO is.

ISO 8601 Week Numbering (Monday Start)

The international standard, ISO 8601, starts weeks on Monday and defines Week 1 as the one containing the first Thursday of the year. This is more rigorous:

  • Week 1 always has at least 4 days in the new year.
  • Days in late December can belong to Week 1 of the next year, and early January days can belong to Week 52 or 53 of the previous year.
  • Every year has 52 or 53 ISO weeks.

Most business software, European companies, and international standards use ISO. If you work across borders, this is the system that matters.

When the Two Disagree

Near year boundaries, the US and ISO week numbers can differ by one β€” and occasionally more. Example: if January 1 is a Friday, the US calls that Week 1 (it contains January 1). ISO might call those same days Week 53 of the previous year, because the week doesn't contain a Thursday in the new year. So "week 1" can mean different calendar dates depending on the system.

Which One Should US Reports Use?

If your audience is purely US and informal, the Sunday-start system is fine. For anything that crosses borders, ties into business software, or needs to be unambiguous, use ISO 8601. The safest move is to state which system you're using whenever week numbers appear in a report.
